Purity Ring - Shrines: The Album that Defined the Sound of 2012 and 2013

The album's lyrics, written by James, deal with themes of self-empowerment, and the album is imagined as being an "intensely personal" and strange narrative about strong, young aspiring female witches who experience and interact in a place without any males as they improve, grow and protect themselves.[6] James' lyrics have been described as "gory", "striking" and "fantastical", drawing comparisons to the Brothers Grimm.[6][18][19] The song's titles use portmanteaus of English words,[10] while the album's title comes from the line "Build it into pinnacles and shrines of some / Some ghastly predicament of mind you'll find", from the track "Obedear".[6]

Purity Ring's approach to synth pop on Shrines blurs the line that separates dark and cute. While it brings the new LP some unique qualities, the overall experience of these eleven tracks is a bit one-dimensional.WATCH THE REVIEWadminReviews2012, album, bellispeak, discussion, music, purity ring, REVIEWS, shrines, talk

Purity Ring - Shrines (2012)

Our first day's ride was probably ten or twelve miles, andtook us through such "heavenly streets" as we never knewbefore, and did not expect to walk in till we entered thegates of the New Jerusalem. Besides the Street of Benevolenceand Love, which might be considered the great highwayof the Celestial City, there were streets which bore theenrapturing names of "Peace," "Bright Cloud," and "Longevity;"of "Early-bestowed Blessings" and of "EverlastingLove;" of "One Hundred Grandsons" and (more ambitiousstill) of "One Thousand Grandsons;" of "Five Happinesses"and of "Refreshing Breezes;" of "AccumulatedBlessings" and of "Ninefold Brightness." There was a"Dragon street," and others devoted to "The AscendingDragon," "The Saluting Dragon," and "The ReposingDragon;" while other titles came probably a little nearerthe plain fact, such as "The Market of Golden Profits."All the shops have little shrines near the door dedicated toTsai Shin, or the God of Wealth, to whom the shopkeepersoffer their prayers every day. I think I have heard ofprayers offered to that divinity in other countries, and noone could doubt that these prayers at least were fervent andsincere. 2ff7e9595c
